tassel (-s), n. [OFr < L. 'the collar of a cloak, a label'.] (webplay: hem).
A pendant ornament, attached to the corners of cushions, to curtains and the like, consisting of a bunch of threads or small cords hanging in a conical shape from a solid rounded knob or from a knot formed by their junction with a cord; tassels in nature include those hanging from trees or corn tassels.
