FUME, n. [L. fumus, Fr. fumée, smoke.]
- Smoke; vapor from combustion, as from burning wood or tobacco. Bacon.
- Vapor; volatile matter ascending in a dense body. Woodward.
- Exhalation from the stomach; as, the fumes of wine. Dryden.
- Rage; heat; as, the fumes of passion. South.
- Any thing unsubstantial or fleeting. Shak.
- Idle conceit; vain imagination. Bacon.
