DAC'TYL, n. [Gr. δακτυλος, a finger; L. dactylus; probably a shoot. See Digit.]

A poetical foot consisting of three syllables, the first long, and the others short, like the joints of a finger; as, tēgmĭnĕ, cārmĭnĕ.
